• Require a technician on all jobs who has been formally trained and passed all required tests.

• Require a continuing education program to keep technicians up-to-date on the latest changes in the industry.

• Maintain liability insurance to protect all parties in the event of an accident.

• Maintain a written complaint policy and agree to Better Business Bureau or similar arbitration to resolve disputes, and accept the conclusions and recommendations of arbitration.

The IICRC Develops The Standards For The Restoration Industry

The IICRC has been the driving force in establishing the main industry standards and reference guides for professional carpet cleaning, water damage restoration and mold remediation. These IICRC standards take years to develop and require the coordination of experts in the field: manufacturers, industry organizations, insurance professionals, training schools, contractors, and public health professionals.

Every five years, the standards are reviewed and updated. The water damage restoration field changes rapidly with advancements in technology and science, and therefore the standards must evolve to keep pace.

Avoid Disasters in the Cold Winter

2/11/2021 (Permalink)

The winter season is here and with it comes shorter days and lower temperatures. No matter where you live, winter brings a change in the weather. Many people use alternative heat sources like fireplaces, portable space heaters, and wood burning stoves to help keep homes warm. Did you know, heating equipment is a leading cause of home fire deaths?  According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment fires cause an estimated $1 billion in direct property damage annually. Keep the following safety tips in mind to help reduce your risk of heating-related fires in your home the winter season.

  • Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.
  • Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.
  • Keep anything flammable at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove, or a portable space heater. Have a three foot “kid-free zone” around open fires and space heater
  • Test smoke alarms monthly
  • Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.

Just the facts: Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If you would like your home or business inspected we can assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and remediation expertise to remediate any problem. Call us today! (740) 756-7003.

Fire Damage Prevention Tips

4/29/2019 (Permalink)

Fire Safely in the Workplace

As the owner, or manager, of a corner cafe or a quick service restaurant, you know that fire is one of the worst things imaginable. It will endanger the lives of your staff and your guests and destroy your property, shutting you down indefinitely.

It will always be a good idea to take a look at your established policies to ensure that your practices and procedures to prevent fires in your establishment are appropriate and are being followed.

Here are some essential fire damage prevention tips for your commercial kitchen:

EQUIPMENT SAFETY. Cooking equipment is often responsible for restaurant building fires. All your equipment must be maintained in top condition, from ovens to fryers. Following established cleaning practices daily, and to the letter, in addition to regular professional inspections, will ensure that repairs are made before something happens and that your equipment won’t outlive its safe operation.

GREASE. A buildup of grease in hoods and grease traps can be a dangerous thing. These equipment components operate under high-heat constantly, so they can easily become a fire hazard, as can kitchen duct work. Contact an experienced cleaning and restoration professional to address these issues and help you to maintain healthy indoor air quality.

SPRINKLERS. A critical component of commercial kitchen fire safety is the fire sprinkler system. Corrosion can weaken their effectiveness, so having them regularly inspected will be a good practice in preventing fire damage.

UL COMPLIANCE. If you don’t know how old your kitchen UL suppression system is, verify that information during your next inspection. You may want to consider an upgrade to UL 300 compliance to ensure your commercial kitchen’s safety.

EMPLOYEES. The very best equipment and the most top quality maintenance can never completely prevent restaurant fires. The most effective weapon in your arsenal is going to be your employees. Train them well to always be ready for restaurant fire emergencies through monthly meetings and drills, and encourage their input when addressing safety issues. Make sure everyone knows how to use fire extinguishers and how to safely evacuate your building.

Getting your doors back open quickly will be easier with the help of a professional restoration company. Call us here at  SERVPRO of Fairfield County if you experience fire damage, water damage, or mold issues.

Sump Pump Coverage

4/29/2019 (Permalink)

Sump Pump Failure and Water Backup Coverage

Whether your basement is where you store your treasures or a finished space for entertaining, the right protection gives you peace of mind. Water backup and sump pump failure coverage is an optional add-on that can put your mind at ease.

What is Water Backup Coverage?

Water damage due to sump pump failure can be costly. Our water damage and sump pump failure coverage is designed to mitigate the cost of repairs caused by water leaking into a home due to a backed-up drain or an overflowing sump. While it’s not automatically included in a homeowners policy, it can easily be added on for a fraction of what it would cost to repair and replace water-damaged items in your home.

Property Protection

Your sump pump is designed to remove excess water that accumulates around your home’s foundation. If the system ever fails or the power goes out, water overflow may occur. And you're typically not covered for this type of damage with your homeowners insurance. Having water backup and sump pump overflow coverage gives you that important layer of protection.

Our water backup and sump pump failure protection covers the following damage:

Sewer systems. America’s sewer systems are generally pretty dated, and as with any old infrastructure, these systems may be prone to failure. If a city’s sewer system has issues, regardless of who is at fault, your home could be in for some pain.

Sump pump failure and overflow. A sump pump can be the hero of your basement, pumping excess water out of your home and into areas where it can disperse. But if it fails, you might be in for a soggy basement and expensive repairs.

If you’ve invested in finishing your lower level, you know how important this extra space can be. It deserves customized protection that’s as unique as your home. This coverage completes the project and safeguards your investment from water damage in the event of sump pump overflow and water backup.

Why Do I Need Sump Pump Failure Coverage?

Do I Need Water Backup Coverage?

If you’re still not sure if you should add coverage, consider the following things that might make your home a higher risk for water backup:

You live in a rainy area. The more it rains, the more work your sump pump has to do. And when your sump pump is constantly running, it runs the risk of burning out faster than an average one.

Your home has an old sump pump. Check your sump pump regularly and look for any signs of wear and tear — replacing an old sump pump that hasn’t failed yet is a much better option than waiting for it to fail.

In addition to having sump pump coverage, you can have a battery backup in the event of power failure that will keep the pump running. And if the pump fails, having a second sump pump handy can help you avoid water damage.

Added Water Backup Coverage, Extra Peace of Mind

Your household is made up of many moving parts, which is why we offer optional coverage for you to build a homeowners insurance policy that fits your unique needs. Connect with your Insurance Professional to see if water backup or sump pump overflow coverage is right for your home. They’re happy to help you customize insurance for your home. SERVPRO of Fairfield County
